Power Outage Persists for Nearly Two Weeks in Indiana City, Highlighting Infrastructure Challenges

GARY, Indiana / RankWire.AI / — A potent weather system swept through Northwest Indiana, leaving thousands of Lake County residents without electricity due to widespread infrastructure damage. The outage, lasting almost two weeks, was caused by an August 11 derecho that tore through the area with wind gusts reaching 99 miles per hour. This storm felled hundreds of power poles and cut through distribution lines. Local officials and community advocates have criticized the slow pace of recovery efforts, describing the situation as an unacceptable failure in an American city, with frustration mounting among affected households.

Utility line technicians perform emergency electrical repairs along damaged suburban roadways.

Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO), the regional utility provider, reported that this storm caused the most extensive and complicated damage in its history, initially cutting off power to over 300,000 customers. While most areas saw power restored quickly, Gary remained the hardest hit, with nearly 20,000 residents still without electricity late into the second week. Company officials explained that repairing the damage involved replacing around 300 distribution poles and 44 high-voltage transmission structures within the city alone.

The prolonged blackout sparked public outrage as residents faced extreme summer heat without air conditioning, refrigeration, or working traffic signals. Emergency distribution points provided ice, bottled water, and non-perishable meals to families struggling with spoiled food and medical supply issues. Indiana Governor Mike Braun activated the Indiana National Guard to assist with disaster relief, and the federal government authorized emergency aid through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Utility Restoration Continues as Thousands Remain Without Basic Power

The financial impact on local families grew as many spent hundreds of dollars on fuel for portable generators and traveled out of state to purchase ice and batteries. Local businesses, including grocery stores and retail outlets in Gary, faced severe disruptions, with many remaining closed. Despite this, major industrial facilities like U.S. Steel at Gary Works continued operations, utilizing localized power grid setups to sustain manufacturing activities.

Leaders from civil rights organizations and local officials voiced concerns about disparities in recovery timelines, especially in lower-income communities. NiSource Inc., NIPSCO’s parent company, denied claims of resource inequality, stating that repair prioritization was based on the physical extent of damage. Utility officials also confirmed that hundreds of mutual assistance linemen from neighboring states had been deployed to expedite grid repairs.

Emergency Agencies Coordinate Relief and Cooling Efforts

As crews worked toward complete restoration, state regulators announced investigations into utility tree-trimming practices and system maintenance policies. Meteorological experts explained that the combination of broad straight-line winds and rain-saturated soil led to uprooted trees, which caused cascading failures in overhead power lines. This event has intensified the national debate on grid modernization and the importance of burying distribution lines in regions vulnerable to severe weather.

The crisis exposed ongoing weaknesses in municipal power systems during extreme weather. The fact that an American city remains without power for nearly two weeks has fueled frustration, with local leaders calling for long-term capital investments to prevent future multi-week failures during storm seasons. Over the coming months, state regulatory agencies are expected to review the utility’s emergency management strategies and resilience standards.
