INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA / RankWire.AI / – Extensive storms and flooding across Indiana have resulted in at least seven fatalities. Intense rainfall caused rivers to overflow and inundated roads, residences, and commercial properties. The severe weather event began on August 11 and persisted through multiple rain episodes. Central and southern Indiana experienced some of the most severe flooding. Emergency teams worked tirelessly over several days performing rescues, evacuations, and damage assessments in the impacted areas.

Authorities confirmed that the victims included a 4-year-old boy, three men, and three women. The fatalities occurred in Delaware, Jennings, Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and Henry counties. Delaware County reported two deaths, while each of the other counties recorded one. Among the most recent victims was a 31-year-old cyclist found in Henry County after floodwaters compromised a section of road.

National Weather Service officials stated that some regions received over 10 inches of rain during the storm. River levels surged significantly as multiple storms moved across the state. The White River reached historic levels in Anderson and Noblesville, surpassing records from 1913. Indianapolis experienced its most severe flooding in more than 30 years as floodwaters encroached into low-lying neighborhoods.

Floodwaters Prompt Rescue Operations and Evacuations

Rescue teams utilized boats to evacuate residents trapped by rising waters in various communities. Authorities ordered or assisted with evacuations where streets became unsafe. Noblesville reported approximately 170 evacuations over a 72-hour window, affecting more than 550 homes. As conditions worsened, Indianapolis opened emergency shelters and dispatched rescue crews to areas near the White River.

Widespread power outages also affected Indiana due to the storms. Nearly 130,000 utility customers were still without power late Sunday, after outages peaked near 300,000. Flooded roads, damaged bridges, and eroded pavement impacted several counties. As the White River receded, Indianapolis reopened floodgates, while crews continued inspecting public infrastructure. Residents started cleanup efforts at homes, businesses, and public spaces affected by the flooding and storm debris.

Federal Disaster Assistance Bolsters Response Efforts

Governor Mike Braun declared a statewide emergency due to the storm’s strain on local response capabilities. Subsequently, President Donald Trump approved a federal emergency declaration for Indiana following a formal request from the state. This allows the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist local, tribal, and state agencies with emergency response and recovery efforts. The federal aid covers essential work to safeguard lives, public health, safety, and property. As floodwaters gradually receded, state and local agencies coordinated ongoing recovery operations.

By late Sunday, some river gauges showed signs of improvement, though flood risks persisted. The White River’s levels dropped from major to moderate flood stages, yet water remained above flood thresholds at several sites near Indianapolis. Damage assessments continued in communities impacted by floods, road damage, and power outages. Residents faced cleanup tasks at homes, businesses, and public spaces as Indiana began its process of recovery from the storm’s effects.
